NFL Week 1 Optimal Flex Games: Xavier (is) worthy from the start

We're back baby and back in full action with the weekly Optimal Flex Plays! Even though it's only Week 1, you may need to make certain decisions that will get you off to a great start this fantasy season. Who the heck doesn't want to start 1-0 in fantasy? Well, I'm going to get you on the right track and we'll all enjoy the fruits of our labor at the fantasy draft.

Seven games with an O/U of at least 45 points in Week 1 is exciting because it shows how far offense has come in the NFL. If you're reading this, keep reading, we have fantasy matchups to win.

Xavier Worthy, WR, Chiefs vs. Ravens

Simply put, the Chiefs will want to utilize their new young weapon and get him a big play. While Rashee Rice should obviously be in your lineups, it's even more important for Worthy to be on offense with Hollywood Brown out. The last time we saw him on the field (Week 2 of the preseason), Worthy caught 3 of 6 passes for 62 yards and a touchdown and added an 11-yard run. That included a 39-yard catch-and-run from Patrick Mahomes and topped it off with a 22-yard touchdown catch from Carson Wentz. The Chiefs will test the Ravens' secondary to make sure they can handle the young speedster, as Mahomes has (in Worthy) his best deep entry since Tyreek Hill. What might surprise football fans the most? Worthy can run the entire route tree with ease, which should be fun.

Jayden Reed, WR, Packers at Eagles

I'd love to say “let every Packers receiver play from the start,” but first of all, that would be cheating and second of all, it's unrealistic to assume any of them will get over 100 receiving yards. What I do know is that Reed is coming off his rookie season, where he went 64-793-8. He added another 119 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. The Packers love to get the ball to their young playmaker in a variety of ways. While the Eagles have a goal of bolstering their secondary this season, they need to show that they've improved on their second-worst pass defense ranking in the NFL from last year. If they can't get a pass rush, Jordan Love will likely find guys like Reed for a lot of yards. This game has the third-highest O/U of Week 1 at 48.5, but are you really surprised? This game will have a ton of fantasy relevance and Reed is in it.

Greg Dortch or Michael Wilson, WR, Cardinals at Bills

You would expect the Cardinals to be better this season, but why? Because of guys like Wilson and Dortch. We know about Marvin Harrison Jr. and his talent. We know about Matthew Berry's “Ride or Die” Kyler Murray and guys like James Conner, but you have to be as good as your weakest weapons (at the moment). Wilson is coming off a rookie season in which he went 38-656-3 and started 12 times. Dortch will man the slot, perhaps taking advantage of a position where the Bills may have holes after losing franchise safeties Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer in the offseason. They will be replaced by Damar Hamlin and Taylor Rapp, who combined to start twice last season. With one of the highest scoring totals in Week 1 (48) and two exciting quarterbacks (Josh Allen and Kyler Murray), this game has the potential to be a track and field contest.

Zack Moss, RB, Bengals vs Patriots

This summer, Moss' teammate Chase Brown has received much more attention, but the script of the game could be in his favor. The Bengals are 8.5-point favorites against the Patriots, and the 40.5 point total (also the lowest in Week 1) suggests the Patriots offense won't offer much resistance. Moss has a career-high 794 rushing yards and five touchdowns and was RB4 in total fantasy points scored through Week 8 of last season. While we expect Moss to give up touches to Brown (who could have a good game of his own), Moss has at least been brought in to carry the ball on first and second downs. The problem for the Patriots won't be their defense; it could be the amount of time the offense allows them to stay off the field. Look for Moss to wear them down.

Raheem Mostert, RB, Dolphins vs. Jaguars

If you're reading this and thinking, “Mostert had 21 touchdowns last season, so how does he get into the FLEX?” … Well, because he was drafted like one this summer. Despite his first 1,000-yard season in the running game and finishing as an RB5 in total fantasy points, the 32-year-old Mostert was drafted as the RB22 (as opposed to RB7 for De'Von Achane), according to Fantasy Life ADP. As of now He is literally the running back of the Dolphins. on a team that had the best offense in football last season. The Jags had a top-10 rush defense last season, but in a game where the O/U is 49 points, expect some scoring. Mostert proved last season that he can smash from close quarters, scoring 12 rushing touchdowns on 20 carries inside the 5-yard line. The “old man” will get it done in Week 1.

Jameson Williams, WR, Lions vs. Rams

Is this Williams' year? That remains to be seen, but this could be his game and it will be here on NBC (of course). With the highest game score in Week 1 of 51 points, this wild-card round rematch of last season is sure to rock the stage. While the Lions have drafted some good defensive backs, neither they nor the Rams have a top-notch pass defense. For the Rams, they have brought in veterans like Tre'Davious White to back them up, but can he or they be the best players? any of their defensive backs can keep up with Williams? I don't think so, and they will certainly be tested. Dan Campbell has been singing Williams's praises all offseason, and we can expect that to pay off starting in Week 1.
