National police deport fugitive former Philippine mayor – Politics

Indonesia will deport a fugitive former Philippine mayor on Thursday accused of human trafficking and links to Chinese organized crime, an Indonesian police official said.

Alice Leal Guo, a former mayor of a city north of the capital Manila, has been on the run since she was linked to a Chinese-run online gambling hub where hundreds of people were forced to commit fraud or face the risk of torture.

The Philippine authorities who sought her extradition accused the former mayor of Bamban of involvement in the illegal operation – and they accused her of being a Chinese national who disguised herself as a Filipino in order to run for office.

“She [Alice Guo] to the Philippine authorities and picked up directly by the Interior Minister and Police Commissioner,” Krishna Murti, head of the National Police's International Relations Division, told reporters.

“She will be flown back to Manila this evening.”

According to the Philippine Department of Justice, she was arrested on Tuesday in the capital Jakarta.

Guo is also wanted by the Philippine Senate for refusing to attend hearings on her alleged ties to fraudulent farm operations in Bamban.

She is accused of corruption, money laundering and human trafficking in connection with the raid on the fraudulent farm in Bamban.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos thanked the Indonesian government for its assistance in the arrest.

“This should serve as a warning to all those who try to evade justice: This is a futile exercise. The arm of the law is long and will reach you,” Marcos said on social media on Wednesday.
