Manuel Ugarte was involved in an awkward interaction with Erik ten Hag as he was welcomed to the club by the Manchester United manager.

The 23-year-old Uruguayan international was announced as a Manchester United player on deadline day and was presented to fans at Old Trafford ahead of the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

In a video posted at the club's training centre in Carrington on Thursday, the £51m transfer and Ten Hag were filmed speaking on their way to the indoor facilities.

Apparently he wanted to get Ugarte in the mood on camera when he said: “This guy is bringing us the fight.”

However, it seems that it might take some time for the midfielder to understand his Dutch manager.

Ugarte was unsure who his new manager was referring to and answered confusingly: “Who?”

Ten Hag told the confused midfielder that he was talking about him, to which Ugarte replied: “It is an honour for me to fight.”

United could certainly use some fighting spirit after a lackluster start to the 2024-25 season.

The Red Devils narrowly beat Fulham, lost 2-1 away at Brighton and then suffered a crushing 3-0 defeat to arch-rivals Liverpool.

Ten Hag's team looked weak in midfield against Arne Slot's side, with all three goals coming from players who lost the ball in midfield.

Casemiro in particular faced heavy criticism after losing the ball in the run-up to Liverpool's first two goals.

Kobbie Mainoo was then caught off guard in the second half, allowing Mohamed Salah to secure the win.

United fans will be hoping to see Ugarte in action when the team returns to action against newly promoted Southampton on September 14.
