Students and teachers killed in the attack identified

Two students and two teachers were killed in a shooting at a high school in Winder, Georgia, Wednesday morning, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The attack at Apalachee High School killed teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Christina Irimie, 53. 14-year-old students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo were also killed, officials said at a press conference Wednesday evening.

Nine other victims, eight students and one teacher, were taken to hospitals with injuries after the shooting, the GBI said. All are expected to survive.

The suspect, Colt Gray, 14, a high school student from Apalachee, is in custody and was expected to be arrested Wednesday night on murder charges, the GBI said, adding that he will be tried as an adult. Authorities said he used an AR-style weapon in the attack.

The friends and families of his alleged victims are only just beginning to come to terms with their losses.

According to the school's website, Aspinwall and Irimie both taught math.

Aspinwall was also the defensive coordinator for the Apalachee High School football team.

“He was a great father, husband and father,” head coach Mike Hancock told the Athenian Banner Herald“He loved his two daughters and his wife. He also happened to love football and was very well respected in the area.”

Aspinwall was previously a teacher and coach at Mountain View High School in Lawrenceville, Georgia. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of former Mountain View High School teacher and coach Ricky Aspinwall, who lost his life today at Apalachee High School,” the Mountain View High School athletic department said on its Facebook page.

Schermerhorn, who has autism, confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that he was among those killed after his family initially shared his photo on social media when they were unable to reach him after the shooting.

“He really enjoyed life,” said Doug Kilburn, a family friend who New York Times“He always had a positive attitude about everything.” Family friends told the newspaper that Schermerhorn enjoyed reading, telling jokes, playing video games and going to Walt Disney World.

Angulo's sister Lisette wrote on a GoFundMe page raising money for the family's funeral expenses that he was “a very good boy and very sweet and so caring.”

“He was so loved by many,” she added. “His loss was so sudden and unexpected. We are deeply heartbroken. He really did not deserve this.” The fundraiser for Angulo has already raised more than $33,000.

“This is the worst nightmare for all of us,” Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said at a press conference on Wednesday evening. “I want to express my sincere condolences and thoughts and prayers to the families who have lost loved ones, as well as to those injured who are going through this tragic time.”
