Teenager appears in British court charged with murder of 80-year-old man

A 14-year-old boy appeared in a court in central England on Thursday charged with the murder of his 80-year-old grandfather as he walked his dog in a park.

The weekend's incident, in which 80-year-old Bhim Kohli died from injuries sustained in Sunday's attack, is the latest case of alleged youth violence to shock Britain.

Last year alone, several young people were convicted of murder and manslaughter. Dozens of young people were also charged with taking part in anti-immigration riots last month.

The boy accused in the latest case appeared before a youth court in Leicester. He will appear a second time at Leicester Crown Court later today.

Police charged him with murder after Kohli died on Sunday as a result of an attack he sustained while walking his dog in Braunstone, near Leicester.

The boy, who cannot be identified due to his age, spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth.

Four other children – a 14-year-old girl and a boy and two girls aged 12 – were arrested on suspicion of murder but later released without further action.

According to Leicestershire Police, initial results of an autopsy indicated that Kohli died as a result of a neck injury.

His family described him as a “loving, caring person.”
