Students celebrate Teachers’ Day with RG Kar on their lips

Calcutta: With the Incident at RG Kar Medical College on their lips, schools and colleges celebrated Teachers' Day on Thursday on a somber note.
Most of the schools in the city have decided to skip cultural programmes to pay respect to the PGT doctor who was brutally raped and murdered on August 9. Teachers and staff of Narayandas Bangur Memorial Multipurpose School The students wore black badges with the message “We want justice”. School principal Sanjay Barua said, “This year, no one was in a celebratory mood because the incident hit us so hard. However, as teachers, we have a huge responsibility to guide our students. Students on the right track. Hence, we guided our students by giving only speeches and other cultural programmes were cancelled.” At Scottish Church Collegiate School, students decorate the building every year on this day. But this year, they put up pictures painted by students with messages demanding justice for the RG Kar student. A picture of Durga with torture marks was captioned, “Sorry Maa, I need to touch this up.” Students made bracelets that read, “We demand safety for women, justice for RG Kar.” They also laid flowers for a replica of a woman whose eyes were blindfolded with a black band. School principal Bibhas Sanyal said, “I am proud that our students behaved like responsible citizens who care about women’s safety.”

Sarbari Sengupta, headmistress of Children's Welfare Association High School for Girls, said, “We cancelled the cultural programme and sang Tagore's song 'Bandh Bhenge Dao' before dispersing them for the day. We always tell them to be good but strict people and now we are telling them to be careful to ensure their safety.”
The Rabindra Bharati University Teachers' Association (ARBUTTA) organised a protest march and sit-in demonstration involving teachers, students, officials, staff and alumni.
The march started in front of the university's central library on the BT Road campus, headed towards Sinthi More and returned to the campus, where they sang Kazi Najrul Islam's famous song 'Karar oi louhokopat' and shouted slogans demanding justice.
The day’s programme ended in front of the statue of Rabindranath Tagore with the song “Aguner Parashmoni”.
ARBUTTA President Jyotsna Chattopadhyay said, “This Teachers' Day is a day for all of us – teachers and students – to demand justice. This fight will continue until justice is achieved.”

The Karnataka State SDMC Coordination Forum has submitted a memorandum demanding that Teachers' Day be celebrated on September 5 in schools without declaring it a holiday. They argue that holidays disrupt children's education and are against government guidelines and stress on the importance of school-level celebrations to teach children the importance of Teachers' Day.
