Stabbing in Banbury: Man named and charged after attack

Following investigations by Thames Valley Police, a man has been charged in connection with a stabbing in Banbury.

At 12.20am on Sunday 1 September, police officers were called to the junction of Butchers Row and High Street.

A man in his twenties was “found with stab wounds” and taken to hospital where he remains in a “stable condition.”

Thames Valley Police have now identified a 46-year-old man and laid charges in connection with the stabbing.

Niko Gjika, of McKeevor Place, Banbury, was today (Friday 6 September) charged with one count each of Section 18 – causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a bladed article.

A police spokesman said on Friday morning: “Gjika has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Oxford Magistrates' Court today.”

A 37-year-old man had previously been arrested in connection with the investigation. Police confirmed on Tuesday, September 3, that the arrested man was free on bail until November 25.

Part of the market square in Banbury was cordoned off by police on Sunday morning following the incident.

Earlier this week, a TVP spokesman said: “We continue to appeal for any witnesses and anyone with footage or information to contact us.”
