Dolphins CB Jalen Ramsey agrees to a record three-year, $72.3 million extension

Ramsey had three interceptions and five pass breakups in 10 games in his debut season for the Dolphins in 2023, resulting in a 52.9 passer rating allowed when opposing quarterbacks dared to throw in his direction, according to PFF. His presence helped Miami clinch a wild-card spot in a tight AFC race last season.

The Dolphins needed a cornerback who could effectively cover one side of the field and acquired Ramsey via trade before the 2023 season. Ramsey certainly did that, but the use of his talents could change in 2024.

Anthony Weaver intends to use Ramsey more on the field in his first year as the Dolphins' defensive coordinator, calling the seven-time Pro Bowler “the ultimate chess piece.” That would mean more opportunities for Ramsey, who has produced 22 interceptions, 97 pass defenses and six forced fumbles in eight seasons, to create plays.

Before we see how that plan plays out, Ramsey must first overcome a hamstring injury that kept him out of practice leading up to Week 1. In the meantime, the Dolphins can take comfort in the fact that the 29-year-old will remain with the club for the foreseeable future, as Miami looks to end a drought without playoff victories with a competitive roster this season.

The former first-round pick out of Florida State has been one of the league's most outstanding cornerbacks since being selected in 2016, earning three All-Pro honors. According to NFL Research, only four CBs in the Super Bowl era have earned more All-Pro honors than Ramsey – Hall of Famer Deion Sanders (6), Rod Woodson (5), Darrelle Revis (4) and Willie Brown (4).

It seems like Ramsey is destined to join them in Canton one day, and the Dolphins have paid him accordingly so he can spend the rest of his prime years in South Beach.
