“The Storm” interview on ABC’s “20/20”

play

Controversial true crime character Karen Read has yet to capture the public's attention, even though the murder trial of the Massachusetts woman accused of killing her boyfriend, police officer John O'Keefe, ended in July with no jury verdict.

ABC's 20/20 will air a special segment on the tumultuous events on Friday, titled “Karen Read: The Perfect Storm,” in which the 20/20 team will try to make sense of the chaos, confusion and controversy surrounding the case and the high-profile trial.

A trailer for the hour-long segment features “rare” interviews with Read herself, some of which took place immediately before the trial, as well as with O'Keefe's family and friends, and promises “exclusive personal videos and Karen Read speaking candidly to herself.”

Here's a look back at the case and how to watch the special.

Who is Karen Read?

Read is a 44-year-old Massachusetts woman who was accused of killing her boyfriend, 46-year-old O'Keefe, a Boston police officer, after he was found dead in the snow on a co-worker's lawn on the morning of January 29, 2022.

In a trial that drew national attention, prosecutors claimed that Read struck O'Keefe with her car after a night of drinking and then fled. But the defense, led by heavyweight attorney Alan Jackson, argued instead that Read was a convenient scapegoat for a cover-up initiated by local law enforcement – a theory that gained increasing public acceptance.

After months of testimony, the trial came to a rather unsatisfactory conclusion when a mistrial was declared on July 1 of this year due to a hung jury.

What is the ABC 20/20 interview about?

According to ABC, the special “Karen Read: The Storm” will include interviews with Read at various points during the trial and beyond.

A pre-release ABC report said there would be an interview in which 20/20 “caught” Read in her hotel room as she prepared for trial. There would also be “personal interviews with John O'Keefe's family and close friends.”
