Rituparna Sengupta booed during protests in Kolkata: ‘Nobody knew who they were’

Bengali actress Rituparna Sengupta was booed on September 3 when she took part in a protest demanding justice in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.

According to the report by AajTak Bangla, Sengupta said she was pushed and verbally abused by a group of unidentified people during a protest on September 3.

As reported by PTIIn Kolkata, actress Rituparna Sengupta was harassed by a group of protesters in Shyambazar demanding justice for the victim of RG Kar. When Sengupta tried to address the crowd and show her support, she was met with shouts of “Go back”.

The situation escalated and Sengupta was escorted by the police and her bodyguard to her vehicle, which she used to leave the scene.

“I don't understand why there is this resistance against us. It's scary. The way they pushed me, I could have died. They used vulgar language. Young boys and girls started hitting my car. Nobody knew who they were. They are nameless. They probably approach all protests in the same way. Such elements give the protest a wrong direction and confuse the masses.” AajTak Bangla reported Sengupta.

Earlier, actress Rituparna Sengupta expressed her support for the movement in a video message and regretted that such outbreaks of violence continue to occur. “It is shocking that we are still facing these problems. We need assurances that such acts of violence will not be repeated,” she said.

Earlier on Wednesday, West Bengal's Reclaim The Night campaign, demanding justice for a doctor who was raped and murdered in a government hospital in Kolkata last month, was targeted by violence in the town of Mathabhanga. During the protest, a protester was allegedly attacked by members of the TMC.

Pradyut Saha, a branch secretary of the CPI(M) and employee of the Mathabhanga municipality, was reportedly attacked during a demonstration organised by the West Bengal Democratic Writers' and Artistes' Association and the People's Theatre Association.
