Our analysis: The form of both teams

The Nations League returns during the first international break of the new season. Belgium and Israel are two of 16 nations competing in four groups in League A. The top two teams in each group qualify for the quarter-finals in March 2025, which consist of home and away matches. The four winners advance to the finals in June.

After a promising qualifying campaign, Belgium delivered a disappointing performance at Euro 2024 this summer. The last time we saw them was in their round of 16 exit against France, where Kevin De Bruyne defended his team's tactical change.

Israel was not represented in Germany after being eliminated in the semi-finals of the play-offs with a 1:4 defeat against Iceland. This is therefore the first competitive match in almost six months.

Belgium doesn't need Luk to win

Despite their disappointing performance at Euro 2024, Belgium's strength in qualifying matches cannot be overlooked. Their unbeaten run in Euro 2024 qualifying, where they won 6 out of 8 matches and scored an impressive 22 goals and conceded just 4, shows their ability to dominate in competitive matches.

This goal difference alone suggests that they are capable of winning by a significant margin against perceived weaker teams. The Red Devils are still ranked as the sixth best team in the world by FIFA, while Israel are a long way behind in 78th place.

The game behind closed doors on neutral ground could result in even conditions, but could benefit the more experienced and technically superior Belgian team. Domenico Tedesco's side can record a victory by several goals with their individual quality and tactical sense.

The addition of Kevin De Bruyne to the squad is a huge win for Belgium. De Bruyne is one of the best midfielders in the world and greatly increases Belgium's creative and goalscoring potential.

Coach Domenico Tedesco stressed how important De Bruyne is to the development of younger players. He will play a key role and potentially orchestrate a comfortable victory. Romelu Lukaku was left out after asking for time off to focus on his fitness following his move to Naples.

However, the Red Devils became more dangerous at the Euros when more mobile options were introduced. Fresh from his brace against Leverkusen at the weekend, Lois Openda will start here, supported by the electrifying Jermey Doku.

Two of Israel's last three international matches have seen at least four goals scored. In their last competitive match, Iceland overcame that tally with a 4-1 home win, ending Israel's hopes of qualifying for Euro 2024.

Action at both ends

Expect a more open Belgium in this clash, with the focus more on the future than the here and now. Tedesco explained that they have six months to “try something out” before World Cup qualifying begins.

He wants to bring in new players to test them a bit. All this suggests that there will be mistakes and, as with any transition, the opponent will have the opportunity to take advantage of indecision.

Experienced centre-back Jan Vertonghen has ended his career with the national team, leading to the call-up of 18-year-old Julien Duranville. Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois, considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world, refuses to play under Tedesco.

Israel scored four goals in their last international match against Belarus, and all-time record goalscorer Eran Zahavi is expected to play, hoping to improve on his tally of 35 goals in 74 international matches.
