2 people arrested after fatal shootout between rival gangs in Miami

MIAMI – Two 19-year-olds were arrested following a fatal shooting between gang members that occurred in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood over the summer, authorities confirmed.

According to their arrest reports, Symarri Williams of Miami Gardens and Sheldred Johnson of Miami were taken into custody on Thursday after warrants were issued for their arrest.

Both of them are accused of premeditated murder.

According to the arrest warrants, officers responded to the area between Northwest Second Avenue and 52nd Street shortly after 6:45 p.m. on July 1 after receiving two ShotSpotter alerts for a total of 30 gunshots.

According to police, officers found a gunshot victim, 24-year-old Andre Mitchell, lying in the depression next to a blue Nissan Altima, and another man named Alfred Vickers II, also 24, nearby suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Both were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where Mitchell died.

According to police, Vickers survived his injuries and has since been released from the hospital.

According to arrest warrants, the victims and a third man, Dontae Davidson, were in the Altima when a dark Hyundai Genesis slowly drove past them.

According to police, the rear driver's door of the Genesis opened, Mitchell got out of the Nissan and shot at the Genesis.

Surveillance video shows a dark BMW SUV driving past and someone inside shooting at the Nissan, authorities said.

According to arrest warrants, a white Kia K5 was also seen parked on the north side of the street before three people got out and fired shots in the direction of the victims.

Investigators said they eventually learned that the Kia had been rented by a 21-year-old man named Ja'twan Phillips, a Miami Gardens resident and member of the Slice Gang, a rival gang to Mitchell's Boss Life gang.

According to an arrest warrant, a search warrant revealed that Johnson's phone followed the same route as the Kia “before, during and after the murder.”

Another warrant states that Williams was arrested in a separate case on July 18 while in possession of a Glock weapon. Police said they later found that the shell casings matched those found at the shooting scene.

It is unclear how many other suspects the police are still looking for.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
