From the gruesome murder of the sniper Dipu to his father's fight to the subsequent fate of the gangsters D Brothers

On August 24, a mobile phone was recovered from gangster Susanta Dhalasamant's cell in Bolangir Jail. The discovery of the mobile phone bolstered allegations that criminals are running their crime syndicate unhindered from behind the four walls of the prison. This is a serious problem that law enforcement agencies seem to have been defying for years.

For those who don't know, Susanta Dhalsamant is the brother of Sushil Dhalsamant, who once ruled the underworld world. The duo was called the D-Brothers. Both the gangster brothers are now behind bars after being arrested by the Commissionerate Police in 2016.

The arrest of the D brothers

Senior police officials involved in the special operation said that the team that was trying to arrest the D gangster brothers had no information about where they were heading during the raid in Pokhariput area of Bhubaneswar. A large-scale search was then carried out at the gangster brothers' house in CDA in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

The police were surprised to discover a huge cache of arms and ammunition, including three revolvers, 108 live ammunitions, 13 mobile phones and cash worth over Rs 11 lakh in their hideout in Pokhariput. In Cuttack, the police found cash worth Rs 2.56 crore, a few pistols, live ammunition, a carbine and a double-barrelled pistol. They also found 18 bank passbooks and two handcuffs.

Criminal history of the gangster brothers

The two gangster brothers Sushil and Susant Dhalsamant have been active in the underworld since 1993. Sushant, who was wanted in three murder cases, had been on the run since 2004. He travelled to several states and was active in Visakhapatnam, where he was staying under the name Manoj Patnaik. At that time, a driving license from Andhra Pradesh was also seized, on which Sushant was pictured under his false identity.

If sources are to be believed, the two gang brothers were in close touch with criminals from several states, including Mumbai and Kolkata, who wanted to expand their base through them. Apart from extortion, the criminals were suspected of running a large arms trade after the police seized several firearms and ammunition from their hideouts.

The murder case of sniper Dipu and Om

The arrest of the gangster brothers subsequently paved the way for the reopening of several old cases. In February 2016, the Chauliaganj police registered a murder case against the gangster duo Sushant and Sushil Dhalsamant based on a complaint filed by Mani Swain, the wife of Om Swain, another associate of the brothers who went missing in 2013.

Dipu and OmDipu and Om

Apart from Om, the mysterious disappearance of Dipu alias Manoj Mallick also came into the limelight. It was alleged that both Om and Dipu were beaten to death by the gang brothers along with some other accomplices on November 13, 2013, a day after the two went missing.

Dipu's father played a crucial role and fought till the end for justice for his son. The Chauliaganj police registered a murder case on the court's instructions based on the complaint of Adwaita Mallick, who alleged that his son Dipu was murdered by the Dhal Samant brothers.

Then both Om and Dipu were accomplices of the gangster brothers. They kidnapped the duo on November 13, 2013 and took them to a farmhouse in Athagarh belonging to one Nirmal Rout, another aide of the D brothers. Both Om and Dipu, who were sharpshooters, were beaten to death the next day. Chilling details of the murder According to sources, Dipu had joined the Dhalsamant brothers' gang in 2006 through another close accomplice of the duo.

Dipu was recruited by the gangster brothers as a sniper and soon became one of their confidants.

In 2011, things took a turn. Dipu wanted to replace the gangster brothers as they were paying him less for the work he did for them. Later, the gangster brothers assigned one of their key associates to track Dipu's activities.

In 2013, Dipu disappeared and was allegedly killed along with Om by the gangster brothers in Athagarh.

Senior police officials claimed at the time that the gang brothers had packed the bodies of Dipu and Om in gunny sacks and headed straight towards West Singhbhum in Jharkhand. They then used two cars and later threw the bodies off a bridge. The gang members then went through the area and set the bodies on fire after pouring petrol on them.

Some villagers discovered the charred bodies and informed the Gua police. A case under sections 302 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code was registered and the identity of the victims could not be ascertained at that time as the bodies were over 70 percent burnt. The Gua police subsequently conducted an autopsy and later buried the bodies.

In May 2016, police filed charges against the Dhal Samant brothers and 14 others in a local court for the alleged murder of Manoj Mallick, alias Dipu. The 1,120-page chargesheet contained statements of six people, including Dipu's family members, as well as forensic reports on blood stains and other evidence.
