The 20-year-old driver of the vehicle and his three passengers left the right lane for reasons that are still unclear and hit the outer guardrail. This caused the vehicle to be pushed to the left and collided with the central guardrail. The vehicle eventually came to rest on its side. The four occupants suffered minor injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The road towards Rüdesheim had to be closed for some time. In the resulting traffic jam, another traffic accident occurred at around 3:30 a.m. A 26-year-old driver recognized the situation too late and drove into the vehicle in front of her. It turned out that the 26-year-olds were significantly under the influence of alcohol. A breathalyzer test showed a value of 1.83 per mille. Fortunately, no one was injured in this second accident.
