In a tragic accident, a man was killed after he was allegedly hit by a car and dragged for about 10 metres, officials said in Delhi's Connaught Place on Saturday. The victim, identified as Lekhraj (45), a homeless man, was taken to the hospital while the driver of the car fled the scene soon after the accident on Wednesday. However, the car driver was arrested the next day, officials said.

The victim was declared dead at the hospital. According to a police official, the driver, Shivam Dubey, 28, was tracked down using CCTV footage.

Defendant borrowed a friend’s car

Shivam Dubey, a native of Madhya Pradesh, borrowed a car from a friend to meet someone in Connaught Place in south Delhi's Mahipalpur on Wednesday, the official said. On his way back at around 3.25 pm, the car he was driving allegedly hit Lekhraj when he was crossing the road near Barakhamba Radial Road on the outer circle of Connaught Place. After the collision, Lekhraj got stuck under the wheels of the car, but Dubey allegedly continued to drive the vehicle, the official said.

Defendant arrested

The officer added that after being dragged for about 10 metres, Dubey allegedly fled from the accident site, leaving Lekhraj on the road. He was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared him dead. After fleeing the accident site, Dubey handed the car back to his friend. Police identified him after checking CCTV footage and the owner of the car was traced.

Accordingly, Dubey was arrested and booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the official said. The police also seized the car involved in the accident. The officials added that further investigation is underway.
