NPP and NDC cannot fight galamsey – Kofi Koranteng

New Vision Movement presidential candidate Kofi Koranteng says neither the New Patriotic Party (NPP) nor the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are willing to solve the problem of galamsey, which leads to pollution of various water bodies.

In his view, the fundamental problem lies not in Galamsey itself, but rather in a failure of leadership.

He argued that both major political parties had exacerbated the problem rather than solved it.

In an interview with JoyNews' Newsfile on September 7, he said: “We have never had a galamsey problem. We don't have a galamsey problem. It is the leadership that has failed. It is not galamsey that is bad.”

Mr Kwarteng stressed that the problem had persisted under both the NPP and NDC governments and had only worsened over time.

“This government or the NDC government will not solve the galamsey problem. They cannot, they will not. They will talk and embrace the problem but they will not solve it. These are two criminal organisations that have taken over Ghana.”

“People are dying from the toxicity of our food and water. The tubers absorb the acid and the mercury and all the other heavy metals.”

According to the presidential candidate, all attempts to crack down on galamsey, including protests, are ineffective.

“We've reached a point where the cancer has spread. After stage four, it's a full-blown cancer. It's fatal and at this point, no chemotherapy, no radiation will help. Maybe we can remove the tumor. Our only solution is proper management,” he said.
