‘Sanjay Roy should be released on bail’, court questions absence of CBI lawyer

A CBI lawyer forced a Kolkata court to wait 50 minutes over the bail application of Sanjay Roy, the suspect in the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case. Times of India reported. Here are the top ten updates:

1. According to the TOI report, the frustrated judge even questioned whether she should consider granting the accused bail in view of the delay. “If the lawyer is not present, he (Roy) should be granted bail,” said Deputy Chief Justice Pamela Gupta when she came to know from a CBI official at 4.10 pm that the public prosecutor was late.

2. West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Friday forwarded the Rape Prevention Bill passed by the Assembly to President Droupadi Murmu for his scrutiny. Bose, who had earlier received the technical report of the bill from Chief Secretary Manoj Pant on the same day, forwarded the bill to Murmu after perusing it, he said.

3. “The Governor referred the 'Aparajita Bill' to President Droupadi Murmu for consideration. He referred it after receiving the mandatory technical report from the state government,” the official said PTI.

A Kolkata court on Friday rejected the bail plea of ​​Sanjoy Roy, the main accused in the rape and murder of a woman doctor in a government hospital, and ordered 14 days of judicial remand till September 20. Lawyers handling the case were physically present in the court while the accused was present virtually. “When the hearing of the case began, Roy started crying,” CBI sources said.

5. The Supreme Court will on Monday consider a case it has taken up on its own initiative relating to the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. According to the September 9 case list on the Supreme Court website, a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra is scheduled to hear the case.

6. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Friday urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to put actions before words on women's safety. In a post on X, Bhupendra Patel told the West Bengal Chief Minister, “Mamta Didi, we need actions, not just words. The POCSO Act and other laws on women's safety are sound, but their impact depends on prompt and fair action by local police. From investigation to conviction, timely justice is crucial.”

7. Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in connection with the RG Kar doctor rape and murder case, accusing her of trying to distance herself from the issue. Chowdhury also alleged that there were attempts to mislead the investigation.

8. “From the very beginning, there was an attempt to mislead the investigation so that no one would blame the state government… which is why we do not know who the real culprit is in this case. When the CBI took control, Mamata Banerjee fled from her responsibility. If she wants, she can go to the CBI and offer her help in catching the culprit. She can say that in court too. She just wants to distance herself from it…” said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

9. On Friday, the youth, student and women's organisations of the CPI(M) staged a spontaneous sit-in in Howrah after the police stopped their procession on its way to the health department. The protesters demanded justice for the young doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered in a government hospital.

10. Members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Students' Federation of India (SFI) and All India Democratic Women's Association began their march towards the office of the District Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) but were stopped by police barricades. After a minor scuffle with security forces, the protesters sat down in front of the barricades.
