Rooney, Manchester United's all-time leading goalscorer, was a delight for fans when he returned to Old Trafford, and they could be heard begging him to score, no matter where he was on the pitch, after his wonder goal.

He is currently manager of Plymouth Argyle, joining the Championship side after a stint at Birmingham City last season which lasted just 83 days.

He got the job after appearing as a pundit for the 2024 European Championship. Plymouth is currently in the relegation zone after the first four games.

He left Manchester United, where he was widely considered Britain's best player, in 2017 after 393 appearances and 183 goals.

He then returned to his boyhood club Everton, picked up the number 10 shirt and scored his 200th Premier League goal.

Since then, he has been captain of the American team DC United at Derby County, where he also served as player-coach.

This morning, Rooney's Plymouth side lost 1-0 to Stoke in a close game – the game was sealed by an 83rd minute winner.

Stoke's Swedish goalkeeper Viktor Johansson made some excellent saves to frustrate Plymouth.

After the defeat, Rooney said: “We didn't press aggressively enough in the first 15 minutes, but I felt we took control of the game from then on. We were better in the second half.”

“When we have momentum in the game, the players have to be in the right positions, in the middle of the goal, and when we are there we have to take those chances and not grab shots.

“I think if we had been more determined and ruthless in front of goal, we could have won the game.”

“It's basically the same message we spread in the first four (league) games.”

“After the win against Middlesbrough we knew Stoke would come here with confidence.

“As the game went on, I had the feeling that if anyone was going to win the game, it was us.”

“Of course we are disappointed that we conceded one, but there were also many positive aspects.

“We were aggressive in the second half and got into some really good areas, and when you get into those areas you have to take advantage of it.”

“Unfortunately, we let Stoke come back into the game and they scored.”

“I think the players have absorbed a lot of information. Since the first (championship) game, there have been three close games. We lost the game today because we didn't take advantage of our opportunities.”
