Daniel Cormier says Jorge Masvidal is not the same as he was in 2019 and doubts people are “still interested in his return”

Daniel Cormier does not believe that Jorge Masvidal would have the same pulling power in his MMA comeback as he used to.

On his YouTube channel, DC commented on Masvidal's plans for an MMA comeback after his disappointing move to boxing. Cormier doesn't think it's impossible that “Gamebred” will return to MMA, but he doubts whether fans will even want to see the former BMF champion again.

“Nate looked pretty good that night and I thought he won the fight, but then Masvidal started talking about mixed martial arts again. Look, I'll tell you this: Jorge Masvidal should be commended for what he did to become that star because when you look at his career as a whole, you really see a guy who spent most of his prime years, most of his youth, as a mediocre fighter,” Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “He just was. It is what it is. That's nothing to be ashamed of. It is what it was… Remember, when he started his UFC career, nobody cared,” Cormier said.

“But then he has this great year where he beats Darren Till, then he beats Ben Askren, then he beats Nate Diaz and becomes BMF champion. 2019, Madison Square Garden, Rock puts on the belt. His star never shines so bright [after that]”, he continued. “…Look at the names on his resume. When you look at the career as a whole, it all comes down to one year where Jorge Masvidal got you interested and made him a star. But my question to you now is: do you still care? Because that's what he's banking on, isn't it?”

“He's 39 years old, he's lost his last four MMA fights, he's lost a boxing match,” he added. “He said he was going to come back, weaken somebody and the UFC was going to beg him to fight for the championship. My question to you is: Do you care now? Do you care like you did in 2019? Do you care like you did when he was on that incredible run, when he went from a mediocre guy, from a guy who was a bit of a journeyman, to a major attraction? He and Kamaru Usman sold a boatload of pay-per-views. But do you care today, in 2024, to see Jorge Masvidal come back and fight somebody?”

Masvidal lost four fights in a row before deciding to retire from MMA. His last fight under the UFC banner took place in April 2023 at UFC 287.

Despite this, “Gamebred” is very confident that he could still fight for the UFC title when he returns. For Masvidal, one more massive knockout win is enough and the UFC will “beg” him to fight for the title again.
