“Numerous” people shot in “active shooting” on highway near small town in Kentucky

“Numerous people” were shot in a shooting spree on Interstate 75 near Exit 49 north of London, Kentucky, the Laurel County Sheriff's Office said Saturday evening.

The sheriff's office said the highway was closed near the exit, which is 9 miles north of London.

Reuters reported that police are still searching for the suspect.

London, about 80 miles south of Lexington, Kentucky, has a population of 7,600.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear urged people to avoid the area.

“Kentucky, we are aware of a shooting on I-75 in Laurel County,” Beshear said. “Police have closed the interstate at exit 49 in both directions. Please avoid the area. We will provide more details as they become available.”

The highway is closed between exits 41 and 59, FOX 56 reported, citing the Kentucky Department of Transportation.

London Mayor Randall Weddle also asked people to avoid the area on his Facebook page.

Karen Kelly, chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers, also wrote on Twitter that she had “heard reports of an active shooter on I75 between exits 49 and 41. Highway closed. Shooter in the woods. Pray.”
