USWNT legend Alex Morgan’s farewell game will be broadcast as a historic broadcast

U.S. women's soccer legend Alex Morgan's farewell match on Sunday, when San Diego Wave FC takes on North Carolina Courage, is set to be the first women's sporting event to be broadcast simultaneously on multiple networks in the United States.

Morgan announced in a social media post on Thursday that she would retire from professional soccer, ending a glittering 15-year career that saw her win two FIFA Women's World Cups (2015 and 2019) and an Olympic gold medal (2012) with the USWNT.

The 35-year-old, who is pregnant with her second child, will play her final game on Sunday at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California, when the Wave host the North Carolina Courage in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL).

The game was originally scheduled to air on NWSL+ and Paramount+, but the league announced Friday that it will also be available on CBS Sports Network, Prime Video, ESPN2 and ESPN+. The game is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

“Alex Morgan has had an immeasurable impact on both the NWSL and the global soccer community, and she has inspired generations of players and fans around the world,” said NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman.

“We are so grateful to CBS Sports for helping to take the league to the next level, for always being a great partner and recognizing the pivotal moment to make this unprecedented broadcast possible, as well as Prime Video and ESPN for their partnership in honoring a true sports legend.

“Our partners coming together to celebrate Alex is an event that speaks volumes about the power of sport and female athletes to unite fans around the world. Alex couldn't be more deserving of this moment,” Berman added.

Striker Morgan has been part of the American top league since its founding in 2013 and scored 60 goals during her stints with the San Diego Wave, Orlando Pride and Portland Thorns.

She also won the 2022 NWSL Golden Boot with 15 goals and led Portland to their first-ever NWSL championship in 2013.

Outside the United States, Morgan played for French club Lyon, winning the league, French Cup and UEFA Champions League with them during the 2016-17 season. She also played briefly for English club Tottenham Hotspur.

Morgan, a two-time U.S. Soccer Player of the Year, played 224 games for the national team (ninth-most all-time), scoring 123 goals (fifth-most all-time) and providing 53 assists (ninth-most all-time).

Morgan's last game with the United States was in a friendly against South Korea on June 4, 2024. She was not part of the team that won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

Off the field, Morgan is a pioneer in equal pay and equal treatment for women in sports.
