Naomi Watts on Nicole Kidman's role as “The Perfect Couple” with her ex

Naomi Watts has no problem with her best friend and her ex getting together on screen.

In conversation with Weekly entertainment at the Toronto International Film Festival for her new film with the fitting title, The friendWatts says her best friend of decades, Nicole Kidman, approached her first before she teamed up with her former partner of 11 years, Liev Schreiber, in the Netflix thriller series. The perfect couple.

“We always keep in touch, we're best friends,” Watts tells EW. “That was very nice of her.”

Kidman and Schreiber play the wealthy couple Greer and Tag Winbury in Netflix’s The perfect couple, is based on the successful book of the same name by Elin Hilderbrand. The crime series revolves around the Winbury family, who have gathered in Nantucket for the wedding of their son Benji (Billy Howle) and Amelia (Eve Hewson). However, the wedding is disrupted when one of the participants is found dead on the morning of the ceremony and everyone is suspected.

Watts tells EW that she hasn't seen the new show yet, but she can't wait to see it. “I really want to [watch] because everyone is raving about it. It only came out, what, two days ago,” says Watts. “I'm really excited about it. I've seen the trailer. It looks amazing.”

Watts and Schreiber began dating in 2005 after meeting at the Met Gala. They split in 2016 but have remained friendly since then as they co-parent their two children, Sasha, 17, and Kai, 15.

“We do things very differently. I'm pretty proud of us, as cheesy as that may sound,” Watts said earlier Net-a-Porter“We have made it our absolute priority to be good and kind to one another and we are absolutely committed to that.”

The ex-partners, who were friends, married their new partners in 2023. Watts married Morning show Actor Billy Crudup, while Schreiber married former beauty queen Taylor Neisen, with whom he has a one-year-old daughter, Hazel Bee.

In 2022, Watts shared an Instagram photo showing the former couple and their children along with Crudup and Neisen to celebrate Kai's middle school graduation, captioning it “#modernfamily.”

Watts and Kidman met when the two Australian actresses were auditioning for a swimsuit commercial as teenagers. They chatted for hours in the waiting room and became fast friends until they learned they had both missed out on the job. “We talked about everything: what movies we liked, what friends we had in common, our parents, schools, parties, boyfriends, teenage stuff,” Watts recalled their first conversation in her speech at the AFI Life Achievement Award gala honoring Kidman earlier this year.

The perfect couple is now streaming on Netflix.
