Rape and murder case in Calcutta: Parents of victim accuse police of “covering up crime”

Latest update on Kolkata rape and murder case: The parents of the victim in the RG Kar rape and murder case on Sunday evening accused the police of trying to cover up the crime.

While protesting against the heinous crime, the victim's parents said they were compelled to “get justice” for their daughter.

According to a report by Times of IndiaThe father of the RG Kar victim noted that the widespread public support gave them the strength to fight for justice.

“Justice will not be easy to achieve. We must fight for it. This will not be possible without the support of everyone,” he was quoted as saying by TOI.

“Every time I think about it, I shudder.”

The victim's mother expressed her deep sadness and said that the thought of her daughter's suffering before her death does not haunt her.

“When I think of the agony and pain my daughter had to endure that night, I shudder. She had the ambition to serve the society. Now all these protesters are like my children,” she said, according to PTI.

The victim's mother also criticised the lack of support from the Kolkata police. She further stated that there might have been hope but the police did not cooperate from the beginning.

“Instead, they tried to cover up the crime and tamper with evidence,” she said. TOI.

The body of the young doctor was discovered in the hospital's seminar room on August 9, 2024. The autopsy revealed rape and assault. She had about 25 internal and external injuries.

So far, the police have arrested Sanjay Roy, a volunteer who was seen entering the auditorium at 4.03 am. Sandip Roy, the former principal of the college, has also been taken into custody on corruption charges and the CBI is continuing to investigate the case.

Moreover, both the hospital administration and the police have come under scrutiny for the 14-hour delay in registering the FIR. The victim's parents have also accused RG Kar Medical College and Hospital of trying to cover up the crime by initially assuming it was a suicide. They also said the authorities made them wait for three hours before allowing them to see their daughter's body.
