Dana White gives a preview of the Sphere event

Dana White admits that the UFC at the Sphere offers such a unique show that its success is uncertain.

UFC 306 (pay-per-view, ESPNews, ESPN+) takes place Saturday at the Sphere in Las Vegas and is headlined by a bantamweight title fight between champion Sean O'Malley (18-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) and challenger Merab Dvalishvili (17-4 MMA, 10-2 UFC). The event, dubbed Noche UFC in honor of Mexican Independence Day, will feature just 10 fights, but White said the UFC plans to give fans an experience between each fight.

“We're going to put on this incredible entertainment event,” White said Monday on ESPN's “First Take.” “There will be a movie playing inside the sphere, and that movie will be in multiple chapters. There's a movie before each fight, and you focus on the sphere and the screen, then the fighters come out and then the fight is the star of the show.”

“When this is over, there will be another film, then a fight. This film I'm talking about and these chapters will tell the story of martial arts in Mexico, the history of the Mexican people, their traditions. It is what I call a love letter to Mexico.”

According to a UFC press release, the UFC will “leverage Sphere's next-gen technology to make it the biggest sporting event ever” and feature the world's highest resolution LED display.

The premiere of the film “For Mexico, For All Time” will take place at UFC 306. The film will be told in six 90-second chapters during the pay-per-view portion of the event.

First-time features at Saturday's show include haptic seats, TAIT's automated camera system and live audio for the entire event in Spanish.

“Normally, I can control all the bells and whistles at an event,” White said. “What makes this weekend so unique is that I won't know what's working and what's not until Saturday night, when the show is over. Then it's too late.”

“This is a one-time thing. … In a perfect world, if things go the way I want them to on Saturday night, I think we can package the whole thing up and it could stay at the Sphere and be a show that people can see for the rest of the year.”
