RetailData data leak affects an unknown number of consumers | Console and Associates, PC

On September 6, 2024, RD Holdings d/b/a RetailData (“RetailData”) filed a data breach notification with the California Attorney General after determining that an unauthorized party was able to access the company’s IT network. In this notification, RetailData states that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ confidential information. After completing its investigation, RetailData began sending data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

What caused the RetailData data breach?

The data breach at RetailData was only recently disclosed and more information is expected in the near future. However, RetailData's filings with the California Attorney General provide some important information about what led to the data breach. According to this source, on June 22, 2024, RetailData learned that an unauthorized party had access to parts of its computer network. In response, RetailData launched an investigation with the help of outside cybersecurity experts.

On August 9, 2023, RetailData confirmed that the unauthorized party gained access to its network on June 22, 2024, including files containing sensitive consumer information.

After RetailData discovered that sensitive consumer data was accessible to unauthorized parties, the company reviewed the compromised files to determine what information had been leaked and which consumers were affected.

On September 6, 2024, RetailData sent out data breach letters to everyone affected by the recent data breach incident. While the publicly available data breach letters posted on the California Attorney General's website do not specify what types of data were leaked, the personalized letters recently sent by RetailData were intended to provide victims with a list of the information belonging to them that was compromised.
