Netflix releases first look at Prince Harry's polo documentary series

Prince Harry's Netflix series about the world of polo will soon hit the queues.

On September 9, the steamer announced that the Duke of Sussex’s upcoming documentary series on equestrian sport will be titled POLO and premiere in December.

“POLO is a new documentary series that follows elite global players and offers an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the fast-paced world of sport,” Netflix said in a statement shared with X. “From Archewell Productions and Boardwalk Pictures. Premiering this December.”

The update included four still images, including an image of three polo players on their horses looking out over a field and two athletes vying for the ball with racquets.

Prince Harry, 39, has been playing polo for decades and in April it was announced that he was working on a polo show at Netflix. A statement said the series will “give viewers unprecedented access to the world of professional polo” and will be filmed primarily at the US Open Polo Championship in Florida.

“Best known for its aesthetics and social setting, the series will take a look at the toughness and passion of the sport, showcasing the players and everything it takes to compete at the highest level,” the statement said.

Deadline was first to report the news, which also revealed that Prince Harry's wife Meghan Markle was producing a cooking show with Netflix. Two days later, the Duke of Sussex was spotted with a film crew at the National Polo Center in Wellington, Florida.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were both set to serve as executive producers on the Polo project, with Miloš Balać (Welcome to Wrexham) as showrunner.

Prince Harry is known for getting in the saddle at charity matches, including a fundraiser for Sentebale, the charity he founded with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in 2006 to help children and young people affected by poverty, inequality and HIV/AIDS in southern Africa. He recently rode in the Royal Salute Polo Challenge in Wellington in April and visited the Lagos Polo Club during his trip to Nigeria with Meghan in May.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stopped off to attend a reception in support of Nigeria Unconquered, a charity dedicated to empowering wounded soldiers through sports and rehabilitation programs.

Speaking to PEOPLE on the sidelines of the Royal Salute Polo Challenge match, Harry's friend Nacho Figueras said the Duke of Sussex will give his upcoming Netflix show about polo the same motivated attention as Sentebale.

“Seeing Prince Harry immerse himself in Sentebale makes me want to support him and his other projects even more. I know he will do the same for this series,” Figueras told PEOPLE in April.

“I always wanted to bring polo to a wider audience,” says Figueras, who plays polo all over the world, usually with his wife, Delfina Blaquier, and their four children in tow.

“Prince Harry and I have been talking about polo for years. The production company is incredible and Netflix has a huge platform to reach the biggest hearts in the world. I'm delighted to be involved and think it's a great opportunity for the sport,” he added.

Prince Harry and Meghan, 43, signed a multi-year deal with Netflix after stepping back from their royal roles in 2020 and moving to their home state of California. The New York Timesreported that their production center, later renamed Archewell Productions, would create documentaries, docuseries, feature films, scripted content and children's programs for the streamer.
