Man accused of shooting man and 2-year-old child on Mackow Drive arrested

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The man accused of shooting two people, including a 2-year-old, on Mackow Drive in Toledo on Sept. 5 was arrested Sept. 9.

Toledo police responded to a report of multiple gunshot wounds in the 900 block of Mackow Drive around 10:45 p.m. on September 5. First responders found a 2-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds.

An officer at the scene told 13 Action News the child suffered a gunshot wound to the head while the man was shot in the leg. Both were taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition. According to police reports released Friday, both patients' conditions were stabilized at the hospital.

On September 6, an arrest warrant was issued for a man accused of the shooting. An arrest warrant was issued for 19-year-old Ethan Smith; according to the warrant, Smith fired a firearm into the home, striking the people inside. Witness testimony and video led to the arrest warrant.

According to court documents, Smith is accused of assault.

According to jail officials, Smith turned himself in to the Monroe County Jail around 3 p.m. on Sept. 9. He is being held there and is due to appear before a judge in Monroe on Tuesday to decide whether he could be extradited to Lucas County.

A nearby vehicle and a house were also hit by gunfire.

Investigators said the suspects fired from either a sunroof or the rear window of a vehicle. They said they found evidence that more than 50 shots were fired.

Toledo police Lt. Paul Davis said a department paramedic was the first on the scene.

“He began to examine the 2-year-old, found a gunshot wound to the back of the child's head, rendered aid, then picked the child up and took him outside to the fire department when they arrived on the scene,” Davis said.

Police are investigating whether the shooting was an act of retaliation.

A neighbor who wished to remain anonymous said he heard the 20-year-old screaming after the shots were fired.

“First I heard two bangs, then suddenly I only heard sporadic noises,” he said. “It was like all hell had broken loose. I told my mother to come down.”

Police have not yet identified a possible shooter. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111.
