Suryakumar Yadav recovers from injury; ready to return for Duleep Trophy ahead of Bangladesh T20Is – Report

Suryakumar Yadav | GettySuryakumar Yadav, who missed the first round of the Duleep Trophy 2024 matches due to a hand injury, is expected to return for the second round of the tournament. Surya injured his right thumb on day three of the Buchi Babu Invitational event against TNCA XI. He did not bat in the second innings as a precautionary measure.

The BCCI medical team continues to assess his injury and a further scan next week will determine his availability for the second round.“, the BCCI said in an official press release.

Suryakumar was scheduled to play for India C in the opening round of the Duleep Trophy against India D in Anantapur, but an injury kept him out of the match. He was sent to the NCA where the medical team is closely monitoring his condition.

But according to a report in the Hindustan TimesThe medical staff of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and Surya himself are satisfied with his recovery from the injury.

Surya’s recovery is going well. He is almost 100 percent fit and he knows it,” said a BCCI source.

Surya was present throughout the India A vs India B match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. On Sunday, he spent quite a while talking to some of his Indian colleagues and seemed to be in good spirits. Notably, the BCCI had not named a replacement for Surya in the India C squad.

Surya is expected to play in the second half of the Duleep Trophy but it is unclear whether he will do so in the second round, which begins on Thursday (September 12). If Surya plays India C's next match against India B, it will be his first appearance with the red ball in nearly 14 months.

A good performance in the Duleep Trophy could revive Suryakumar Yadav's Test career. An all-time T20I star, Surya has not been able to translate that form and success into ODIs and Tests. He made his Test debut against Australia at home last year, but an injury knocked him out of the series after just one Test.

Meanwhile, there will be numerous changes in the Duleep Trophy teams as the members of the Indian team for the Bangladesh Test, except Sarfaraz Khan, will travel to Chennai to take part in the preparation camp on September 12.
