The great wave of inflation is over. In August, the inflation rate remained below the target of two percent for the first time in more than three years, at 1.9 percent.

Energy in particular is cheaper than a year ago. Food was only 1.5 percent more expensive year-on-year – but at a very high level.

Prices for consumers rose at an annual rate of 1.9 percent, the Federal Statistical Office announced, confirming its estimate from two weeks ago. The last time prices rose this slowly was in March 2021.
