Arsenal captain Odegaard undergoes medical after injury

Arsenal will assess the fitness of captain Martin Odegaard ahead of Sunday's north London derby at Tottenham Hotspur after the attacking midfielder limped off during Norway's UEFA Nations League home match against Austria last night.

Odegaard, 25, appeared to have sprained his left ankle midway through the second half of Norway's 2-1 win and required the assistance of physiotherapists before being able to leave the field to receive further treatment.

Norway coach Stale Solbakken said: “It looked bad in the dressing room. He had no chance to continue. I'm not sure [Arsenal manager Mikel] Arteta will call me tonight and praise me.”

However, Norwegian team doctor Ola Sand was a little more optimistic about the extent of the injury. “Martin is doing quite well now,” he said. “He sprained his ankle slightly. We will see what happens next and what we will do about it during the course of the evening and tomorrow.”

Arsenal's midfield will already be without Declan Rice, who is suspended for Sunday after being sent off on Matchday 3 against Brighton & Hove Albion, and Mikel Merino, who sustained a shoulder injury in his first training session after joining from Real Sociedad.

Meanwhile, another new signing, defender Riccardo Calafiori, is undergoing assessments after suffering a calf injury in Italy's win over France last week. Striker Gabriel Jesus has missed the last two matchweeks with a groin injury.

Following the Spurs game, Arsenal face an away game at Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League in midweek before travelling to Manchester City in a week's time on Sunday.

Arteta is expected to give an update on his squad in his pre-match press conference at 1.30pm BST on Friday.
