Today’s “Wordle” No. 1179: Hints, tips and answers for Tuesday, September 10

ForbesToday’s “Wordle” No. 1178: Hints, tips and answers for Monday, September 9th

Tuesday is named after the Norse/Germanic god Tyr, a god of war. In Spanish, Tuesday is called Martes, named after another god of war, Mars. In French, it is called Mardi and in Italian, Martendi. In German, the day is called Dienstag, also named after Tyr.

It seems that Tyros and Mars are locked in an eternal language battle on this special day of the week. Most days of the week are divided between Germanic/Norse gods and their Roman counterparts. Odin and Mercury fight over Wednesday. Thor and Jupiter battle on Thursdays. Freya and Venus dance on Fridays.

Curiously, Saturday is named after the Roman god Saturn in English, while in many other European languages it means “day of the Sabbath” – in German Samstag, in French Samedi, or in Spanish Sabado. Sunday, on the other hand, is quite literally a day of the sun in English and German Sonntag, while dimanche (French) and domingo (Spanish) mean “day of the Lord.”

Of all the days of the week, only Monday seems to unite us linguistically. It means, of course, the day of the moon and has the same meaning in French (lundi), Spanish (lunes) and German (montag).

And enough rambling. Let's solve this Wordle!

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot. right here.

SPOIL was a deceptively good place to start. I thought with only a green “L” I wasn't exactly a good place to start, but it turns out there were only 57 words left. MEDAL cut that down to just 8 and added a green “E” to the mix. At this point I almost guessed REBEL because I had just watched (and enjoyed) Rebel Crest on Netflix, but for some stupid reason I chose BEVEL. Oh well!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 0 for guessing in four and -1 point for losing to the bot. Oh well!

How to play competitive Wordle

  • If you get a 1, guessing is worth 3 points, if you get a 2, guessing is worth 2 points, if you get a 3, guessing is worth 1 point, if you get a 4, guessing is worth 0 points, if you get a 5, guessing is worth -1 point, if you get a 6, guessing is worth -2 points and missing the Wordle is worth -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent, you get 1 point. If you draw, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add these points together to get your score. Keep a daily score or just play for a new score every day.
  • On Fridays you get 2XP, which means you double your points – positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running record or just play day by day. Have fun!

Today’s Wordle etymology

The word “Rebel” comes from the Latin word “Rebels”, which consists of the prefix “Re-“ (means “again” or “back”) and “bellum” (which means “war”). So, “Rebels” literally means “to wage war again” or “to renew war”. This term refers to someone who takes up arms again after defeat or submission.

From Latin it came into Old French as “Rebel” before it entered Middle English in the 14th century as “Rebel.” In English, it meant someone who opposed authority or control, especially someone who offered armed resistance to a government or ruler. The verb form (“rebel”) followed the same development.
