Happy Gilmore 2 is officially in production,” the official Netflix account posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday. The post included a photo from the set showing an image of the Boston Bruins hockey jersey that Sandler's character wore in the first film.

On Monday, his 58th birthday, Sandler posted the same photo on Instagram with the message: “It's not over. The way I see it, we've only just begun.” In the original film, Sandler says a similar line to his rival Shooter McGavin, played by Christopher McDonald.

Plot details for the sequel have not yet been announced. Happy Gilmore In “The 40 Fingers,” Sandler played an unsuccessful hockey player who becomes an unexpected golf sensation thanks to his incredible drives.

McDonald let the cat out of the bag earlier this year when he said in a radio interview that a script for a sequel was in the works. The project was officially announced a few months later, and Netflix posted on social media in May: “Happy Gilmore is back! Adam Sandler will reprise his iconic role in a brand new film coming to Netflix.”

Sandler has said in recent media appearances that Benny Safdie will play a role in Happy Gilmore 2while NFL star Travis Kelce will make a cameo appearance. McDonald will also reprise his role as shooter.

During a recent interview with The Hollywood ReporterSandler shared his excitement about reprising the popular character.

“The idea that my buddy Tim Herlihy and I had, and the more we talked about it and worked on it scene by scene, the more it evolved, and we're very confident in the movie itself,” Sandler said at the time. “We're happy where we are, and it's an exciting time for us. I don't know how we suddenly thought, 'Let's do this.' It just happened.”

In 2015, Dugan said THR that he did not see Happy Gilmore sequel as likely. At the time, the filmmaker said of Sandler: “I can't imagine he would ever do that, but we're in Hollywood, so you never say it's never going to happen.”
