Lockdown at Northwest High School lifted after shooting

UPDATE: 2:00 p.m.

Omaha police have released further details about the shooting, the victim and the circumstances.

The Omaha Northwest High School office reported the shooting. It is believed to be an isolated incident between two students.

The victim is a 15-year-old boy who was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Meanwhile, the suspect was arrested on school property near North 80th St. and Bauman Ave.

UPDATE: 1:45 p.m.

Omaha Public Schools has provided an update on student reunification. First responders will begin transporting students to the football stadium. From there, according to OPS, the order of transportation will be as follows:

  • Students who travel by bus will be taken away from campus first.
  • Once this is completed, students who do not ride the bus every day will be handed over to the families present on site.
  • Students who walk or drive to school every day will then be exempted.

UPDATE: 1:30 p.m.

The curfew at Northwest High School has been lifted.

UPDATE: 1:15 p.m.

Omaha police said there was no threat to the public and a suspect had been located and taken into custody.
The school is now secure, but the curfew remains in effect for the time being.

Omaha police have confirmed that a shooting occurred at Northwest High School. The shooting was reported just before 12:30 p.m. and the school was placed on lockdown.

The school remains on lockdown while police search for the suspect. According to OPS, the lockdown will remain in place while the investigation is ongoing.
