Blue Jays pitcher Bowden Francis fails to get a hit in 7 innings against the Mets | National Sports

TORONTO (AP) — Blue Jays right-hander Bowden Francis did not allow a hit in seven innings against the New York Mets on Wednesday and Toronto leads 1-0.

Francis allowed one walk, one strikeout and struck out two batters. He threw 102 pitches, 60 strikes.

Dave Stieb threw the only no-hitter in Blue Jays history on September 2, 1990 in Cleveland.

New York's Harrison Bader opened the sixth inning with a drive to deep left field, but Toronto's Davis Schneider made a great catch off the wall.

Francisco Lindor then hit a line drive to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at first base.

Guerrero also caught a soft liner by Jose Iglesias in the fourth.

Francis managed a no-hitter against the Angels on August 24 until the ninth inning before outfielder Taylor Ward hit a home run early in the bottom of the bottom inning.

Francis was named AL Pitcher of the Month for August when he went 4-1 with a 1.05 ERA, striking out 39 and walking four in six appearances, five starts.

There have been four no-hitters this season. The Chicago Cubs had a combined no-hitter against Pittsburgh last Wednesday, following complete efforts by Houston's Ronel Blanco against Toronto on April 1, San Francisco's Blake Snell in Cincinnati on April 2 and San Diego's Dylan Cease in Washington on July 25.
