Why Barry Keoghan won't be at the MTV VMAs with Sabrina Carpenter in 2024

Barry Keoghan did not attend the MTV VMAs with Sabrina Carpenter after vocally supporting her Short and sweet Album release online. Carpenter came to the event alone. Keoghan was not seen in the audience, not even during her performance, where she kissed a woman playing an alien on stage as part of the number.

Keoghan's absence is understandable, as the couple have never attended an awards ceremony as each other's escort. He was last seen at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8:

Aside from a few social media posts, a co-starring role in the “Please Please Please” music video, and a joint appearance at the Met Gala, the couple has kept their relationship largely private.

Keoghan and Carpenter sparked breakup rumors last month. A source told People on August 19 that the couple were “on and off.” However, Keoghan hinted that he and Carpenter are currently very close after posting several posts on Instagram about the release of her new album and her song about him.

Carpenter, for her part, said B Magazine last week that she prefers not to talk about her love life. “I understand why people are interested,” she said. “But they can listen to my album and decide for themselves what the songs are about.”

She previously sparked speculation that the couple had separated privately during an interview with The Guardian in August.

When asked about working with Keoghan on “Please Please Please,” she called it “one of the best experiences I've ever had. I feel so honored and privileged to have been able to work with such a great actor!” The outlet wrote that she then “poked fun at her own shy diplomacy in a nasal voice,” repeating: “Such a great actor!”
