The transfer of Jazz Chisholm Jr. by the Miami Marlins was actually the right move

I was stunned and saddened when the Miami Marlins traded CF Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the New York Yankees before the trade deadline. I thought about three reasons why the trade happened, but it didn't make me feel any better. One of my favorite players was no longer on the team, and I kept asking myself why a contract extension wasn't a better choice. Now I fully support the trade.

The Miami Marlins made the right decision with Jazz Chisholm Jr.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. was one of my favorite Miami Marlins players for years and I was very sad to see him go. The more I think about it, the more I agree with his trade. A big reason for me was that he got injured again. I don't like to call anyone “injury prone,” but since his debut in 2020, he has never been able to play a full season. He seems to get injured every season and miss a lot of time. How can we trust him to stay healthy and productive?

I'm also pretty sure the Jazz would want a contract in the $100 million+ range given his confidence. I don't think he would settle for a “hometown discount” or being paid based on his current performance. He would love to be paid as an MVP contender as he definitely sees himself as someone capable of doing just that. I just don't think his performance is worth that cost.

Another big reason I changed my mind about the transfer is because every time I look at his stats, they're just not impressive. He never had that one big season with the Miami Marlins. Just look at his batting averages over the years:

2020: .161/.242/.321

2021: .248/.303/.425

2022: .254/.325/.535

2023: .250/.304/.457

2024: .249/.323/.407 (Marlins) and .257/.328/.445 overall.

Now do you see the problem? None of those batting lines are impressive. The 2022 one comes closest, but the batting average is low and the OBP is just average. Until this season, he had never hit 20 home runs in a season. His highest RBI total is 61 from 2023.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is a talented player and a nice guy. However, he is too injury-prone and unproductive (partly due to injuries). The Miami Marlins sold him for a high price because he was injured shortly after the trade.
