Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers hits his career high with his 46th home run

LOS ANGELES – Shohei Ohtani hit his 46th home run of the season, tying his career high, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-0 in a record-breaking heat on Sunday.

With the temperature at first pitch at 103 degrees, the highest in Dodger Stadium history, Ohtani hit a 450-foot solo hit down the right field line to Tanner Bibee in the fifth inning that was reviewed to determine if it was fair.

“We were just curious why it took so long to get to see the replay,” said Dodgers teammate Max Muncy. “Maybe the guys in New York admired it as much as we did.”

Ohtani has hit 22 home runs of at least 450 feet in his career, all since 2021. That's five more than any other player during that span.

Ohtani also hit 46 home runs for the Los Angeles Angels in 2021 in his unanimous American League MVP season. The Japanese star has 46 stolen bases and is looking to become the first major league player with a 50-50 season.

“I try not to be so conscious of it and focus more on having a good feel at the plate and whenever possible during the game, whether it's stealing bases or going to the next base, that's what I try to do,” Ohtani said through an interpreter.

He is just one home run away from tying Cody Bellinger in 2019, who had the third-most home runs in a season in Dodgers history.

Ohtani finished the day 2 for 4. He was intercepted at first base in the third inning.

As for the scorching heat, it was 39 degrees at the first pitch in Game 1 of the 2017 World Series against Houston. On Sunday, the Dodgers gave all fans a coupon for a free bottle of water.

Jack Flaherty pitched 7⅓ innings, striking out six players and allowing four hits. The Southern California native has a 5-1 record since coming from Detroit. He said he didn't feel well last week either.

“It was fun when you experience such different elements, either really cold or really hot,” Flaherty said. “It was just another challenge. It was fun. You need a little bit of preparation beforehand. Make sure you're moving everything and staying hydrated. I'm pretty sure everyone else was hotter than me out there.”

Muncy hit a home run for the Dodgers in the eighth inning, his 12th in an injury-shortened season.

In Dodgers injury news, pitcher Gavin Stone (right shoulder inflammation) will not throw for 10 days, according to manager Dave Roberts, then rebuild to see how he feels. His status for the postseason is questionable with 19 games remaining.
