NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban resigns amid FBI investigation into Adams administration

NEW YORK (WABC) — NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban resigns amid ongoing FBI investigation into the Adams administration.

In a letter to the police department announcing his resignation, Caban wrote: “My full attention has always been on the NYPD – the agency and people I love and have served for over 30 years. However, news of recent developments has distracted our agency, and I am unwilling to focus my attention on anything other than our important work or the safety of the men and women of the NYPD.”

The resignation followed the seizure of Caban's phones and those of other senior law enforcement officials by federal investigators last week.

Investigators also seized devices from Sheena Wright, Mayor Eric Adams' first deputy, her partner and the city's schools chancellor, David Banks, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Philip Banks, who is also Banks' brother, and Timothy Pearson, one of the mayor's closest confidants.

Caban's lawyer said he “unequivocally denies any wrongdoing” and has cooperated fully with investigators.

Full letter from Edward Caban:

To the members of the New York Police Department:

As we gathered yesterday on solemn Memorial Day to remember our fallen brothers and sisters, I was reminded of the unwavering dedication and resilience of the NYPD. Serving as your Commissioner has been the greatest honor of my career, and I am proud to stand by your side every day.

I have dedicated over 30 years of service to this department. Every day, whether as a patrol officer on the streets of the Bronx, as chief of department, or in my many stops in between, I am inspired by the courage, tenacity, and selflessness of each and every one of you. The greatest city in the world would not be what it is without the greatest police in the world. Together, we have removed thousands of guns from the streets, brought justice to countless victims of violent crime, and helped heal and bring communities together. The families, business owners, tourists, and everyone who walks the streets, rides the subway, and lives freely and safely in New York do so because of you.

My entire focus has always been on the NYPD – the department and people I love and have dedicated over 30 years of service to. However, the news of recent developments has created a distraction for our department, and I am unwilling to turn my attention to anything other than our important work or the safety of the men and women of the NYPD. I have enormous respect and gratitude for the brave officers who serve this department, and the NYPD deserves someone who can focus solely on protecting and serving New York City, which is why – for the good of this city and this department – I have made the difficult decision to resign as Chief of Police.

Thank you for the trust you have placed in me and for the opportunity you have given me to serve side by side with the members of this great department. I firmly believe we have the best police force in the world and have complete confidence in the leaders across the N

YPD.

Edward A. Caban
