Illinois “super mayor” criticized for $85,000 concert

Tiffany Henyard, the self-proclaimed “super mayor” of a Chicago suburb, is under fire after she hosted an $85,000 party last month with R&B singer Keke Wyatt and rapper J. Holiday that, according to media reports, was largely ignored.

Henyard, the mayor of Dolton, Illinois, has faced heavy criticism for her use of taxpayer money for first-class travel, concerts and more.

“It was a flop,” former Dolton trustee Valeria Stubbs, who watched the mini-concert herself at the Taste of Thorton Township event, told WGN-TV.

Wyatt received $30,000 for his 30-minute singing performance. J. Holiday received $20,000 for a half-hour performance, according to records obtained by the news agency through the Freedom of Information Act.

The community spent another $6,600 on renting bouncy castles. Other costs included money for comedians, a sound system, staff and equipment.

In total, the performance will cost taxpayers at least $85,769.

“I was speechless,” Lansing resident Jennifer Robertz told the news station. “I was angry. This is my money. This is the people's money.”

Henyard, a Democrat, has clashed with residents and local officials over her excessive spending and corruption allegations. She recently escalated the standoff with the Dolton Village Board of Trustees when she held a board meeting despite the trustees' postponement.

At the meeting, she explained that she had brought order to the community despite the red numbers.

Henyard vetoed the board Request for a federal investigation for her alleged misuse of funds and also vetoed the hiring of former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who was tasked with leading a special investigation into the mayor.

In May, the Board appointed mayor pro tempore to serve in Henyard's place should she refuse to perform her duties. Lightfoot's investigation into the city's financial situation found in a preliminary report that Dolton's general fund balance in 2022 was $5.61 million, but by May 2024, the balance had dropped to a deficit of $3.65 million.
