7 new movies and series to watch this weekend on Netflix, Max and more (September 13-15)

Autumn is approaching and that guarantees one thing: new films and TV shows are falling off the market like ripe apples. So there is a lot to see this weekend on NetflixMax and other top Streaming services.

Our weekend watchlist is led by the Emmys, the annual awards for television's best stars, and “Emily in Paris,” Season 4, Part 2, which closes this chapter of the heroine's romantic and professional adventures. Two machismo dramas return with new seasons: “The Old Man,” starring Jeff Bridges, and “Tulsa King,” starring Sylvester Stallone.

TV's biggest night recognizes the best shows, performances and behind-the-scenes work of the past year. The ceremony will be hosted by father-son comedy duo Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, who rose to fame on “Schitt's Creek” (and are Emmy winners themselves). While Netflix leads all networks in nominations, rival FX dominates the major categories. “Shogun” leads all programs with 25 nominations, followed closely by “The Bear” with 23. They are expected to win awards for outstanding drama and comedy, respectively, as well as acting, writing and directing.

Ciao, Roma! Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) has been enjoying frolicking in the Paris sun, but now she wants to explore a new city… and possibly a new romance. Although she is currently (finally!) dating hot chef Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), things are still complicated as his ex Camille (Camille Razat) is pregnant with his baby… well, at least Cami is pretending to be after a miscarriage. Frustrated by Gabriel and Cami's ongoing bond, Emily seeks solace in work – which puts her in the path of a very attractive Italian client named Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini). Perhaps Rome is where the heart is.

“The Old Man” Season 2 (FX)

Another spy thriller, Slow Horses, has its well-deserved moment, but let's not forget this under-the-radar FX version starring Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow. Former CIA agent Dan Chase (Bridges) was living in retirement away from the public eye when an assassin tried to take him out. He fled, and FBI boss Harold Harper (Lithgow) was tasked with capturing him. In Season 2, Chase and Harper team up to find his kidnapped protégé Angela Adams (Alia Shawkat), aka “Emily Chase.” Their journey uncovers secrets that have dire consequences.

“Tulsa King” Season 2 (Paramount Plus)

“Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan definitely has a type of series he likes to do: dramas with macho guys doing macho things. In “Tulsa King,” Sylvester Stallone plays mafia capo Dwight “The General” Manfredi, who is released from prison after 25 years, only to be exiled to Oklahoma. In season 2, Dwight and his crew continue to expand their empire in Tulsa, but are repeatedly threatened by the Kansas City mafia and a powerful local businessman.

“My Brilliant Friend”, Season 4 (HBO)

The final season of the series, based on Elena Ferrante's bestselling novels, delves into the adult lives of childhood friends Elena Greco (Alba Rohrwacher) and Raffaella “Lila” Cerullo (Irene Maiorino), who met in 1950s Naples. In the late 1980s, they must juggle motherhood and careers, but also face betrayal, disappearances and natural disasters. They also find themselves caught up in the turmoil of the times caused by decades of political violence and social unrest.

Like The Hunger Games and Divergent, Netflix's latest dystopian young adult film is based on a book. Scott Westerfeld's 2005 novel of the same name imagines a futuristic society in which everyone at age 16 undergoes mandatory plastic surgery that transforms them from “ugly” to “pretty.” Tally (Joey King) can't wait for her turn, until she realizes the surgery goes beyond the physical. Then a friend named Shay (Brianne Tju) opens her eyes to an alternative life with the Smoke, a group of renegades who have rejected the surgery and are enjoying their freedom.

“Civil War” (Max)

After “Ex Machina” and “Annihilation”, director Alex Garland has added another provocative thriller to his program. In his latest film, which is set in the not too distant future, the United States is embroiled in a civil war between an authoritarian federal government and various secessionist movements. Washington, DC, is about to collapse. Experienced war photographer Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst) and his journalist colleague Joel (Wagner Moura) are planning an interview with the president. Together with their mentor Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson) and aspiring photographer Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), they embark on a dangerous journey into the middle of a combat zone.
