Rangers extend contract with GM Chris Young and promote him to President of Baseball Operations

One year after winning the World Series, the Texas Rangers have extended their contract with General Manager Chris Young for several years.

In addition, Young was promoted from executive vice president to president of baseball operations, a position last held by Jon Daniels before he was fired in August 2022. The terms of Young's new contract were not disclosed. His original deal was set to expire after this season.

Young's notable decisions since taking over baseball operations included signing free agent infielders Corey Seager and Marcus Semien and pitchers Nathan Eovaldi and Jacob deGrom, as well as hiring three-time World Series winner Bruce Bochy as manager. Those moves paid off, as the team won its first World Series in franchise history last year.

“Our baseball operations group, from scouting and player development to the major league team, is in good hands with CY at the helm for many years to come,” Rangers majority owner Ray Davis said in a statement. “I look forward to continuing our collaboration.”

Young, 45, was hired by the Rangers in 2020 and worked under Daniels. He took over baseball operations when Daniels was fired but has not received a new job title until now. Before joining Texas' front office, he worked for Major League Baseball as vice president of on-field operations under Joe Torre.

Before moving into management, Young spent 13 years as a pitcher with the Rangers, San Diego Padres, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners and Kansas City Royals. He posted a career record of 79-67 with a 3.95 ERA in 271 appearances (221 starts). He worked for MLB after retiring in 2018. The Mets also interviewed for Young for a position in baseball operations before the Dallas native accepted a job with Texas.

Although the 2024 season (the Rangers are 71-76 and third in the AL West) was a disappointment after a World Series title, this week shows the depth of talent Young has built since joining the Rangers. Top pitching prospect Kumar Rocker made his MLB debut on Thursday and will be followed by deGrom and Max Scherzer, who are returning to the team's starting lineup after recovering from injuries.
