Jacob deGrom strikes out four players in his long-awaited return to the Major League

Jacob deGrom's start may have been brief, but on Friday he showed some of what has made him one of the best pitchers in all of baseball over the past decade.

In his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2023, deGrom had four strikeouts in 3 2/3 scoreless innings for the Rangers against the Mariners.

He reached a maximum speed of 98.7 mph, reaching at least 97 mph 20 times and also recording ten failures.

After allowing a leadoff single in the first inning, he avoided trouble by striking out both Julio Rodriguez and Randy Arozarena.

DeGrom's night ended in the fourth inning after he allowed a double and a single, but reliever Walter Pennington bailed out and kept Seattle from scoring.

In total, 41 of the two-time Cy Young Award winner's 61 throws were strikes.

“It's been a long time,” the former Mets star told reporters on Thursday. “I'm happy to be back out there and I'm really looking forward to tomorrow.”
