Here is a recent soccer story from AP:

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Pep Guardiola has confirmed that the long-awaited hearing into Manchester City's alleged financial misconduct will begin on Monday.

The Premier League champions face more than 100 charges relating to a nine-year period in which they attempted to establish themselves as the biggest force in English football. The charges will be heard by an independent commission made up of three judges appointed by a lawyer who chairs the league's judicial committee.

City denies the allegations and Guardiola said on Friday he was relishing the chance to clear the club's reputation. The hearing will take place behind closed doors and a verdict is not expected until next year.

“I'm glad it's starting on Monday. I know there will be more rumors,” he said at a news conference. “We'll see. I know what people are looking for. I know what they expect, I know what I've read for many, many years. … Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. So we'll see.”

The allegations, made in February last year, came after a four-year investigation. The alleged breaches hung over City at a time when the club had cemented its place as one of the leading clubs in world football – winning the Champions League for the first time in 2023 and securing an unprecedented fourth consecutive league title last season.

City was accused by the league of making misleading statements about its finances from 2009 to 2018, after the club was bought by the ruling family of Abu Dhabi in 2008. During that time, City signed some of the world's best players such as Yaya Touré, Sergio Aguero and Kevin de Bruyne and won three league titles – in 2012, 2014 and 2018.

Guardiola was hired in 2016 and has overseen the most successful period in the club's history, including winning the treble of league, Champions League and FA Cup in 2023. City have won the title in six of the last seven years.

The club's exorbitant spending laid the foundation for this unprecedented success and raised questions about whether its dominance could be stopped at all.

The league has financial fair play rules designed to ensure that clubs spend essentially what they earn from contracts that are considered to have a legitimate market value.

The charges were brought after extensive investigations and the publication of leaked emails and documents believed to have been hacked and published by German magazine Der Spiegel starting in 2018. The documents allegedly showed attempts to conceal City's sources of income in order to comply with Financial Fair Play rules set by European football's governing body UEFA and the Premier League.

The city was also accused of violations related to its alleged lack of cooperation in the investigation.

Possible penalties could include a fine, points deduction, the annulment of titles or even expulsion from the English top division, according to league rules.
