Landry Shamet had aroused some interest from the New York Knicks this summer, and the two sides agreed to a one-year deal. The 27-year-old guard has an excellent three-point shot and can provide some points as a substitute. While the Knicks don't have a huge need for guard depth, there is always a need for points and shots in the NBA. Last season, he was mostly a substitute for a struggling Wizards team, averaging 7.1 points per game on a mediocre 55.6% shooting percentage.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski was the first to report the news, and this leads to an interesting discussion about what the Knicks have planned for their guards.

The Knicks are bolstering their bench with more shooters, as Landry Shamet has been a solid shooter throughout his NBA career, sinking an average of 4.9 attempts from long distance at a 38.4% success rate. With the number of season-ending injuries the Knicks had last year, depth has become more important than ever, and Shamet could be a very useful weapon for this team if they decide to hold on to him.

What the bench lacks is some scoring depth, as while Donte DiVincenzo can score, Landry Shamet could provide additional options on that side of the ball to draw attention. Miles McBride is the projected backup point guard on this roster and played some significant minutes last season, and rookie PG Tyler Kolek shined in Summer League.

Currently, the Knicks have a bit of a shortage at the guard position, which suggests the idea of potentially moving that position a bit deeper to try and get a big man.

Mitchell Robinson and Precious Achiuwa are their main centers, but they have negotiated for different centers several times over the summer. Clint Capela of the Atlanta Hawks could be an option for the Knicks, especially since they have shown a willingness to trade players to get some draft capital back. The loss of Isaiah Hartenstein in free agency hurt the Knicks quite a bit, and they have been unsuccessful in finding a suitable replacement.

Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz is another option the Knicks have considered, but they have shown they are willing to wait until they get the price they want before making a trade. Danny Ainge is not going to budge from the high trade prices he sets, and the Knicks would have to move pieces and capital they may not want to part with to make this deal happen.

They have attractive players in their reserves and also some draft capital, but whether a deal will happen now or later remains to be seen.
