New York City's chief legal officer Lisa Zornberg resigns from Adams' office a week after the FBI raided the homes of the mayor's key aides

New York City Hall's chief counsel is leaving her post in Eric Adams' administration – just days after NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban resigned following federal raids on a number of police officers and close associates of the mayor, she announced late Saturday.

Former Manhattan senior federal prosecutor Lisa Zornberg has served as lead counsel to the mayor and City Hall since July 2023.

Her sudden departure came as federal investigators turned their attention to members of Adams' inner circle and other allies.

“I am deeply grateful to Mayor Adams for giving me the opportunity to serve the city, and I strongly support the work he has done and continues to do for New Yorkers,” Zornberg said in a statement.

Adams thanked Zornberg and said he would announce her successor in the next few days.

“We appreciate the work Lisa has done for our administration and, more importantly, the city over the past 13 months. These are tough jobs and we don't expect anyone to stay in them forever,” Hizzoner said in a statement.

Last week, FBI agents searched the homes of Caban and other members of the nation's largest police force as part of a broader corruption investigation into possible abuses of government influence.

Caban's twin brother James is also being targeted by federal authorities because he is said to be acting as a “fixer” for fancy restaurants and clubs in Manhattan as part of his “consulting work.”

Federal authorities also searched the homes of Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Phil Banks and the townhouse shared by Schools Chancellor David Banks and First Deputy Mayor Sheena, and seized their electronic devices.

No one was charged with wrongdoing.

Facing criticism, Caban resigned Thursday to help the police department save face and regain public trust. His tenure as police commissioner is one of the shortest in New York City police history.

“News of recent developments has distracted our department and I am unwilling to focus my attention on anything other than our important work or the safety of the men and women of the NYPD,” Caban wrote in an email to the city police.

His interim replacement is former FBI agent Tom Donlon.
