Including last month's UEFA Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid, Atalanta have come away empty-handed from three of their first games this season after a turbulent summer on the transfer market.

Gian Piero GasperiniThe team began the 2024–25 season with a win against Lecce, but followed that with two defeats against Torino and Inter Milan – and the last defeat was particularly sobering.

Ten minutes after kick-off at the San Siro, the Europa League winners were already two goals down and facing defeat against their Lombardy rivals, having conceded four goals by the final whistle without being able to respond.

After finishing in the top four again last season and winning the club’s first European trophy, Gasperini agreed to extend his stay in Bergamo, but Teun Koopmeiners Then he made his way through the exit – and Ademola Lookman almost followed – while the star striker Gianluca Scamacca was struck down by a cruciate ligament injury.

After a hectic recruitment drive before the deadline, Atalanta will come together after the international break to regain some confidence ahead of their return to Champions League action; Arsenal will be their first opponent next week.

The Nerazzurri have lost three of their first four Serie A games only once in the Gasperini era, in 2016, and will be determined to avoid that fate this weekend as they seek revenge for last season's double defeat to Fiorentina.

Including a delayed season finale – the teams played a previously postponed match in early June as both teams were competing in UEFA finals – Fiorentina beat Atalanta twice last season, 3-2.

However, La Dea prevailed in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia and went on to claim European glory in Dublin, while the Viola suffered another heartbreaking defeat in the Conference League final.

Vincenzo Italiano Then he resigned, despite coming so close to leading the Tuscan team to an elusive title. But new head coach Raffaele Palladino has yet to get Fiorentina back on track.

Only the equalizer in injury time by the new signing Robin Gosens managed to avoid defeat against Palladino's old club Monza just before international football intervened, and the Viola are yet to record a domestic victory in the 2024/25 season.

In fact, their only success to date came on penalties in the Conference League play-offs last month, after the match had to be decided on penalties after two draws against Puskas Akademia.

Although Fiorentina have drawn their first five games in all competitions for the first time in their history, they have also lost just one of their last eleven matches in Serie A since the end of last season.

Atalanta's long list of absences has shortened somewhat recently, as the defensive duo Isak Hien And Sead Kolasinac could return on Sunday, and Nicolo Zaniolo can make it to the bank.

Berat Djimsiti should also overcome a muscle problem, but Giorgio Scalvini and Gianluca Scamacca are both out long-term due to cruciate ligament injuries.

With Scamacca out and Ademola Lookman out of favour since the events during the transfer window, Marco Brescianini, Lazar Samardzic And Mateo Retegui could join forces in the final third.

However, Lookman’s dismissal is not ruled out, and Charles De Ketelaere is also in the race; the former central defender of Bayer Leverkusen Odilon Kossounou could make his debut in defence.

Fiorentina is almost fully fit, Albert Gudmundsson is back in full training after overcoming a calf injury that marred his start in Florence.

Former Atalanta full-back Robin Gosens returns to Bergamo this weekend, starting on the left side of a team led by the resurgent Italian striker. Moise Kean.

Fellow newbies Yacine Adli, Edoardo Bove, Amir Richardson And Daniel Cataldi are all fighting for places in the midfield, while top-class goalkeepers David de Gea is still dueling for the status of first choice with Pietro Terracciano.

Possible starting lineup of Atalanta BC:
Carnesecchi; Djimsiti, Hien, Kolasinac; Bellanova, Ederson, De Roon, Ruggeri; De Ketelaere, Samardzic; Retegui

Possible starting eleven for Fiorentina:

We think: Atalanta BC 2-1 Fiorentina

It will certainly be an entertaining encounter at the Gewiss Stadium, as these clubs scored ten goals each in two matches last season and have played an attacking game this season too.

Atalanta have the highest xG in Serie A so far (6.2), while Fiorentina have had the most shots on goal (21) and the best shot accuracy (64%) – although La Dea should still be ahead thanks to home advantage.
