A Reddit theory about “One Only Murders in the Building” suggests that the killer was unmasked in season 3

Only murders in the building is back and better than ever with its fourth season, premiering every Tuesday on Hulu and Disney+. This year, the cabal of amateur detectives who solve cold cases investigate their most personal case yet: Who killed Sazz Pataki? Sazz, played by Jane Lynch, was one of Charles-Haden Savage's oldest friends, having been his stunt double for decades, including his run in Brazzos. Sazz was murdered in Charles' apartment in the final sequence of season three after confessing to having something important to get off her chest. The resulting cover-up has left Charles, Oliver and Mabel with few clues as to who might have committed this heinous crime – but fans aren't so short of ideas.

The real killer of Only murders in the building Season 4 could be hiding right in front of our eyes – from the very beginning. Fans have become quite adept at deciphering the subtle clues hidden throughout the show's seasons, and have come to the conclusion that the Season 4 killer was cleverly unmasked in Season 3. The theory revolves around Oliver's musical extravaganza. Death Razzle Dazzlewhich fans are convinced has a much darker (and far more significant) undertone than it first appeared. One theory even goes so far as to claim that Death Razzle Dazzle reveals not only Sazz's killer, but also the perpetrator of a huge series of murders, all of which can be traced back to a character that fans have gotten to know over the course of four years.

Only Murders In The Building Season 3 Revealed – Season 4 Plot

Death Razzle Dazzle could be the key to explaining Sazz Pataki's death

A Reddit post by user Subscribe presents a fascinating theory about Death Razzle Dazzlesignificance to the plot of season four. They suggest that the entire musical, from the musical numbers to the characters featured in it, was meant to lay the groundwork for the murders in season four. The Redditor suggests that every character in the musical corresponds to a character from Only murders in the building. The Pickwick triplets are fairly straightforward, corresponding to Charles, Oliver and Mabel. The Nanny, played in the play by Meryl Streep's Loretta Durkin, is a character who will do anything to protect her three children. This theory links the Nanny to Detective Williams, who, despite her tough facade, is quite caring for the main trio (especially in season 4, where she openly admits to being concerned for Charles' safety).

Although it is not mentioned in the Reddit theory above, Sazz Pataki would likely be the constable from Death Razzle DazzleIn the play, the policeman thwarts the murderer's plan and is eventually killed himself. Only murders in the building revealed that Sazz had been investigating something strange going on on the Arconia, only to end up being murdered herself while trying to protect Charles. After the Constable's death Death Razzle Dazzle culminates in the confrontation of the nanny with the real murderer who is trying to kill the triplets, the detective. Since most of the main characters of the play have been taken into account, one question remains for the theory: Which Only murders in the building Character corresponds to the detective – the real murderer – in Death Razzle Dazzle?

To solve this increasingly complicated crime mystery, the Redditor suggests that fans need to pay close attention to “For the Sake of a Child,” which is sung during the showdown between the Nanny and the Detective. The Nanny claims that the Detective has committed “serial killings,” suggesting that there have been multiple murders, not just one. The Redditor connects this line to the frequent mentions of the 6th Avenue Slashera serial killer that Oliver, Charles and Mable have heard about several times in Hidebut I have never investigated it. Subscribe suggests that Sazz investigated the cold case of the 6th Avenue Slasher and discovered that the killer was someone from Arconia. When she got too close to the truth, Sazz was killed.

The Reddit theory ends with the naming of a possible murderer for Only murders in the building Season 4: Lester, the bouncer. Lester has been a fixture in Arconia for years and has revealed very little about his past to the main trio. Like the detective in the play, Lester is someone who is meant to look after the residents of Arconia, but may be hiding more sinister motives. Subscribe suggests that Sazz had learned that someone fitting Lester's description might be the 6th Avenue Slasher, but he feared that Charles, whose basic features resemble Lester, might be accused of the crime instead. Lester then murdered Sazz in Charles' apartment before using his house keys to remove and burn the body. This is supported by his odd admission that he had entered Charles' apartment earlier in the season, studiously ignoring the bullet-sized hole in his window.

Could Lester be a serial killer?

The Reddit theory may be worth further investigation

Things to know

  • Lester is played by Teddy Coluca, who appeared in 15 episodes of Only murders in the building.

Although it may be difficult to imagine that the nice bouncer Lester is a serial killer, this theory is not completely far-fetched. Lester has more access to Arconia than most people and could have used the secret passages in the walls to hide his bloody trail of bodies. This would also have come in handy when he took Sazz's body to the incinerator (which he would also have had access to) and disposed of the evidence. The killer also had access to the abandoned apartment across the street from Charles', which Lester would surely have had a key to. Lester's unprecedented access to the Arconia makes him too tempting a target to rule out just yet.

Lester also revealed in a previous season that he originally wanted to be a Broadway star and even performed off-Broadway in his youth. However, he had trouble holding down a job and spent some time on the streets before being hired at the Arconia. This would be the perfect window of opportunity for him to begin his dark practice of serial killing, only to rekindle it after witnessing the many murders at the Arconia.

Although it is too early in the season to make a definitive connection to Sazz's killer, Lester seems to be a prominent candidate. Fans should watch the Death Razzle Dazzle sequence from Season 3 for more clues about the mysterious killer from Season 4.
