The story behind this year's John Lewis Christmas commercial

The John Lewis Christmas advert is here and with it comes another song you'll be humming for the coming weeks.

This year's advert is performed by Lola Young, a singer-songwriter from South London who started writing songs at the age of eleven.

Her song “Blind Love” has been listened to over 1.9 million times on Spotify, and her track “None For You” has reached almost 1.8 million.

But it is her cover of “Together in Electric Dreams” that will introduce her music to a new fan base.

The song was written in 1984 by Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder for the soundtrack of the science fiction film Electric Dreamsdirected by Steve Barron.

It became a bigger hit than the film it promoted, reaching number three in the UK Singles Chart, where it stayed for 13 weeks.

Barron had previously directed the music video for “Don't You Want Me” by The Human Legaue, the synthpop band of which Oakey was a member.

“Together in Electric Dreams” is often, and incorrectly, referred to as a Human League song, so the band often plays it as an encore at their shows.

Commenting on Young's selection for this year's advert, a John Lewis spokesperson said: “Lola is a brilliant up-and-coming British talent.”

They added that she was “chosen for her rich and unique sound that brings to life the magic of the courtship and the friendship that develops on screen.”
