Christmas comes early in the coastal town

An East Yorkshire resort is testing a unique way to attract off-season visitors: celebrating Christmas in August.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is bringing Bridmas Day to Bridlington on Wednesday 7 August to showcase its winter events and attractions to summer holidaymakers.

Christmas-themed events take place at a variety of locations and service establishments, including Bridlington Spa, Sewerby Hall and Gardens and even the famous country trains.

Nick Coultish, councillor and cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, said the aim was to “show that Bridlington is not just a summer destination” but also a “fantastic place to be at Christmas”.

“It is certainly unusual”

Attractions on the day include festive beach activities, a screening of the Christmas movie “Elf” and cafes serving treats typically eaten in December.

Some attractions will also be decorated.

Elsewhere, the town's country track is playing festive hits and there's a free swimming lesson at East Riding Leisure Bridlington from 10am-11am BST.

The town's panto stars will also be performing in town to promote this year's performance of Jack and the Beanstalk in Bridlington Spa.

Mr Coultish said: “It is certainly unusual to bring Christmas to the coast in the height of summer, but we really hope people will join in the festive fun.”
