“Ghosts” haunts two more Christmas specials

The big picture

  • Fans of “Ghosts” will have to wait until October 17 for Season 4, but can look forward to two holiday specials.
  • Season 4 introduces new characters, including Jay's family, and focuses on the puritanical spirit Patience.
  • The show's creators raise hopes for a possible celebration of the Day of the Dead, shifting the boundaries between the living and the dead.

Fans of CBS Ghosts may have to wait until October 17th for season 4. But in the meantime, the show's creators seem to have no problem giving us a few glimpses of what's to come. During the show's panel today at San Diego Comic Conit was revealed that Ghosts will air not one but two holiday specials next season.

“We will do another Halloween special… patience will play a big role,” said one of the Ghosts Showrunners revealed Colliders Perri Nemiroff today. “We will also be doing a one-hour Christmas special.”

The main character of the Halloween special, Patience, Is a former Puritan and relative newcomer to the rest of the Ghosts Crew. Although the character has only appeared once before, briefly, in the season three finale, it seems she will remain at Woodstone Mansion for now. “Our Puritan spirit will still be with us and she will have a great influence on the house,” Showrunner Joe Wiseman confirmed. “She may not be the biggest Halloween fan.” “In life, she was kicked out of her puritanical village for being a bit too much,” added Showrunner Joe Port.

Season 4 will also feature an hour-long Christmas special that will give viewers even more surprises surrounding the cast. “Not only will we meet Sam's dad, but we'll also meet Jay's family on Christmas,” Wiseman explained. Viewers have already met Jay's sister Bela in previous episodes “Jay's Sister” and “The Ghost of Christmas.” But this special promises a number of new characters. This development could give long-time fans hope of finally meeting Champa Arondekar, Jay's mother, who is often mentioned by Sam and Jay but has not appeared on the show yet.

The showrunners also touched on other holiday-related questions, such as whether their show about the dead will ever have a day of the Dead celebration. “That's a wonderful idea,” one of the showrunners noted in response to this question from a fan. “We always try to push the rules of ghosts, and doing it on Halloween or Day of the Dead is a perfect way to do that, because the idea is that the line between the living and the dead kind of blurs on those days. So, I think something like that would be really fun.”

Ghosts has certainly made a name for itself with its holiday specials of the past. Whether it's the Woodstone Mansion crew accidentally summoning Hetty's spinster on Halloween or watching Thorfinn possess Sam's body on Christmas, the CBS show's holiday episodes always seem to be delightfully chaotic. Fortunately, that seems to be exactly what the characters – and their viewers – like.

Fans wanting more specific details on the content of these upcoming specials may have to wait until they air. But as anticipation builds, it seems like the next season will be another classic addition to the beloved series. With a brand new ghost, more of Jay's family and even an appearance by Sam's father on the way, Season 4 promises even more of the spooky mayhem that audiences know and love – plus two one-hour specials.
